There is a lot of information search engine available on the web, none of that valuable, many of them contradictory. Over the years, the myths that prevail in the search engines have developed. Some of these myths are still encouraged them. Others are based on techniques that were effective years ago but no longer work. Still others come from simple misunderstandings that inevitably come with a relatively new medium.

Myth: Meta tags are the most important search engine optimization feature.

Fact: Several search engines (especially Google) ignore meta tags completely due to constant abuse by webmasters. The only importance placed on the meta tags these days is actually the meta description tag, which will appear as the description of the relevant page in engines that use Inktomi data (such as MSN). Meta tags are virtually irrelevant in the ranking algorithms of the best engines, but many people still believe they are the only optimization strategy they need.

Myth: It is impossible to make search engine optimization in the house.

Fact: It is commonly done at home, and do effectively. This is usually when a corporation hires internal talent that is largely dedicated to the promotion of the website. However, it is unrealistic to expect someone with many other functions work to do a credible job of SEO. Much of the skills are acquired through experience and is mostly desirable to have someone "experhymenting" with the website of the company (especially considering that certain techniques can get penalized engine or banned outright sites ).

SEO is not an exact science, but it is something you can learn overnight. In deciding whether to outsource SEO or do it at home, it is important to take into account the actual costs involved. Sometimes when necessary hours needed to pay someone to learn on the job are taken into account, it is cheaper to outsource (and the results are almost always better). Only a careful evaluation of their objectives and resources can determine the best course of action for your company.

Myth: Sites must constantly re-submitted to keep the ranking.

Fact: This is a scare tactic popularized by various shipping services and software companies. In fact, it is a waste of money to pay to have your site resubmitted once it appears in the database engine. It will not hurt your ranking constantly present (or most people could submit their competitors sites to get penalized), but it will not help, either.

Myth: Search engine optimization is not as effective as the "traditional" marketing.

Fact: In many ways, it is more effective. Companies often spend countless dollars on direct mail, television and radio advertising and mass email without thinking twice. The common thread with each of these strategies is that the prospect is "approached" by society, and that the company must achieve a good number of people to find a couple of motivated prospects. Moreover, search engines can offer highly motivated prospects directly to your site – people who have already demonstrated through use of certain keywords, an interest in your products or services.
